The Accident

Their son Colton fell in the icy water of their swimming pool and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Barely clinging to life, Colton was given less than a 10% chance of surviving. Miraculously, he survived without any long-term complications.

While the Henkles were busy caring for their son, their employees pulled together to keep the store running. "Everyone did what we needed to do to take care of the store so John and Cris could handle the family issues," said employee Clay Arft. "We came in early, worked late, changed schedules — no questions asked."

"Joplin, Missouri community members started a fund for the Henkles, and the local church took up a collection to help pay for medical expenses. John and Cris were overwhelmed by the support.

Just as the community members helped them, the Henkles were quick to pitch in when a large EF-5 tornado caused massive damage in Joplin in 2011. Cris helped with search and recovery, and her Ace store helped with servicing saws and power equipment for the cleanup efforts.

Today, John and Cris reflect on the amazing recovery of their son Colton and the accomplishments he has made in life. Colton has gone on to become a Presidential Scholar at The University of Tulsa. "I was given a second chance," Colton said. "I need to make this one count."
